Iowa tornado kills at least 7, including 2 children

A seventh death was reported in Chariton in Lucas County, but officials reported few details.

damaging buildings and knocking down trees and power lines, authorities said.

The National Weather Service had tweeted Saturday that a "strong tornado" was likely moving very close to Chariton.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds issued a disaster proclamation for Madison County late Saturday night. More Iowa counties could be added, Reynolds said.

“Our hearts go out to all those affected by the deadly storms that tore through our state today,” Reynolds said.

Madison County Emergency Management Director Diogenes Ayala said 25 to 30 homes were badly damaged by the tornado.

Officials didn’t identify those killed but said they were not all in the same location.
